Hydrothermal and mechanically generated hemp hurd nanofibers for sustainable barrier coatings/films

Residual hemp (Cannabis sativa) hurd fibers obtained from hydrothermal, carbonate, and kraft treatments were the resources used to obtain lignocellulosic nanofibers (LCNF) by using an ultra-fine friction grinder. The morphological, crystallinity, chemical characteristics of nanocellulose films carried out SEM, XRD, EDX ToF-SIMS. Water barrier properties same measured in terms water contact angle, vapor permeability (WVP) absorption. found be dependent not only on lignin content distribution, but also film density porous structure. LCNF coatings showed much higher angle (WCA) (80°-102°) than produced bleached CNF. WVP was more content. Overall, LCNF-based derived residual can contribute a circular economy sustainability.
